Jay Watch

‘Tis The Season 2024 Jay Watch Campaign

Jay Watch is a community science program led by Audubon Florida that is dedicated to training and supporting volunteers in conducting scientific surveys that measure the total number of Florida Scrub-Jays and evaluate annual nesting success at more than 45 sites in 19 counties. This program, including its Annual Report (click here to see the latest report), is critical in evaluating the health of Scrub-Jay communities, identifying best management practices for preserving scrub lands, and publicizing the importance of protecting this spectacular bird.

The Florida Scrub-Jay is Florida’s only endemic bird species. This curious and charismatic bird delights locals and draws birders from afar and often rewards these visitors by landing on their hat or shoulder, creating magical moments and invaluable connections with nature. But the Scrub-Jay population is under threat and its population is estimated to have declined by 90% since the early 1800s, largely due to loss of its native scrub habitat.

West Volusia Audubon and the Friends of Lyonia Preserve are once again coordinating a campaign to seek your help in supporting the 2024 edition of the annual Jay Watch survey. Last year’s campaign brought in $20,555 to help support Jay Watch surveys throughout the state – including at our beloved Lyonia Preserve and Blue Spring State Park!

With your help, we can reach this goal and continue to assure that the Florida Scrub-Jay will be around to delight and inspire for many generations to come.
